- Try to practice with lyrics that haven’t been given a well-known melody.
- Contrast phrases, up then down, don’t be afraid to use the same pitches.
- Don’t try to always resolve when writing lyrics — you want to build some tension.
- Avoid Root and IV for a vocal melody
- Use a melody that can be easily flipped or contrasted for development
- When there’s a leap in the melody, consider playing the note that was leapt over for development/resolution, especially when the original notes in the leap are passing tones.
Homework: Come up with a chord progression and melody for the first four lines of a poem, especially one that rhymes
