Stingray

I want to write a description for the stingray exhibit, but I don't know much about them yet. I don't know what stingray species are normally displayed in touch pools, so I look up "stingray touch pool" and find this description for the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky:

Watch as dozens of cownose rays and some southern stingrays soar through the water.

Looking at Wikipedia, I can see a long list of aquariums where this particular ray is featured in touch tanks. So, I think this is the right species to choose.

Thinking about the description I want in the game, I think the following could be covered:

  • What is the animal's name and scientific name? Why does it have the name that it does?
  • Where does it live in the wild? What is its habitat like?
  • What does it eat and how?
  • How do they behave?
  • How do they reproduce?
  • What is the conservation status of the animal according to the IUCN?

For the cownose ray:

  • Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera bonasus). The distinct lobes on the front edge give it the name cownose. 1
  • Social animals known for schooling in large groups for long migrations to different parts of the ocean, but sometimes found in inshore waters. Found at depths to 72 feet (22 meters). They prefer shallow, brackish water and tend to swim near the surface.1
  • In Chesapeake Bay, Virginia consists primarily of bivalve mollusks. Common prey items include nekton, zoobenthos, finfish, benthos crustaceans, mollusks, bony fish, crabs, lobsters, bivalves, and gastropods. They eat the mollusks by crushing the shells between their terrazo-like tooth plates. 1
  • The cownose ray has smooth skin. 1
  • IUCN: Vulnerable https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/60128/3088381
